It was moon-high, and a gray she-cat with black full under markings, face markings and a red stripe streaking her pelt was sitting on a high rock. Everything around her was soot, ash and rock and she sighed at the destruction. The Great Blaze had diminished the forest and all cats had to hurry into the lake. A lot of cats didn’t survive, more than half each clan died, most were elders and kits but a fair amount of warriors died as well as queens. The leaders of WindClan, ThunderClan, and ShadowClan lost their lives gathering everyone up and out. A cold wind blew through her pelt; leaf-bare would be here soon and she knew how badly the clan she was ‘leading’ would suffer, a lot more than the other clan, known as DuskClan, which was made up of ShadowClan and RiverClan survivors. Prey was scarce enough already for StormClan, the Great Blaze had destroyed most of their home and scared away almost all the prey and if it got any scarcer cats in her clan, if not the whole clan itself, would die. Suddenly, a tuxedo she-cat approached. She dipped her head to the gray she-cat and mewed. “Greetings, Wolfcall.” “Moonshine.” Wolfcall returned the cat’s greeting. “You should go to your den soon. It’s late, and you could use some sleep.” Moonshine meowed. Wolfcall sighed. “We all could use sleep, Moonshine. Especially in the state of things as they are now, but I can’t sleep… Not yet. This clan needs food, shelter, and territory to protect it, and soon. Leaf-bare is going to come early this year, I can feel it in my whiskers.” “Did you try asking StarClan for advice?” Moonshine asked. “Yes, but they refuse to meet with me in my dreams. I don’t understand, Moonshine. Why has StarClan abandoned us? And now most of all?” Moonshine padded toward Wolfcall, jumped up on the rock and nuzzled her softly. “Tomorrow is the full moon, I can take you to moonpool if you’d like. Maybe then they’d answer you and help you.” Moonshine suggested and Wolfcall nodded. “We leave at dawn.” Wolfcall and Moonshine left, leaving Lionstrike to watch the camp in their absence. Ashblaze hissed a remark that Wolfcall caught about him being a much better deputy than Lionstrike but she chose to ignore it. Moonshine led the way among the charred remains of trees and the ashes that covered the ground where the grass used to be. Wolfcall suddenly stopped and sat down in front of a small mound in the ground. Moonshine eventually sensed she stopped and turned back to her. Confused to why she had stopped, Moonshine asked. “What’s wrong?” Wolfcall sighed. “This is my parents’ grave…” She slowly explained. “Wolfblood and Auroraheart…” Moonshine mewed, recognizing the burial place. Moonshine nudged Wolfcall after a few moments of silence, her parents had died saving her from the flames. Her younger sister, Azurekit, was also lost but her body was never recovered. “C’mon… we need to get there before sun-high or we’ll miss the Gathering…” Wolfcall reluctantly agreed and they were on their way again. When they finally reached moonpool Moonshine entered the small cave first with Wolfcall close behind. Wolfcall leaned down, drinking some of the water with Moonshine soon after her and then settled down to sleep. Suddenly, she was surrounded by flames and a brightly colored orange tom leaped out from them. Wolfcall recognized the tom immediately. “Firestar…” She mewed and dipped her head to the great leader. Firestar did the same and suddenly everything turned to cinder and ash. “…The Code of the Clans lives forever, but the forest and lake have turned to dust to be blown away in the wind along with those who lived there…” The flaming tom meowed. He then turned into ash and everything blew away with a subtle wind that raced over the area. Wolfcall’s eyes snapped open and she looked over the pool. The Code of the Clans lives forever, but the forest and lake have turned to dust? Does that mean we should move? Beside her, Moonshine was stirring in her dreams. Wolfcall knew she would have to speak with her friend about this but she couldn’t help but mull it over and over in her head until she had a clearer sense of what she should do. The forest and lake have been turned to dust to be blown away in the wind along with those who lived there…We have to move, it’s the only way StormClan can continue to thrive. She decided, but how would she break it to her clan? They would never want to leave this place! Generation after Generation of kits were born here, great heroes died here… She sat back on her haunches and thought. I’ll discuss it with Moonshine when she wakes up, but one thing is clear. StormClan needs to move.

Wolfcall and Moonshine returned to the StormClan camp a little before moon-high and found that Lionstrike had organized a few cats into patrols while they were gone. I really have to think about making him my actual deputy. Wolfcall thought to herself. “Thank you, Lionstrike. Did you think about who should come to the gathering?” Wolfcall meowed as she approached him. “N-no, Wolfcall! Should I have? I thought that was a clan leader’s job so I…” “I’m not a clan leader yet. I still have to receive my name and nine lives. Who do you think I should bring?” “ Well, I for one think you should bring me, Smokehaze, Whitefur, Redtail, Cardinalpaw, Moonshine and Tigerpaw.” meowed a rather loud voice of a dark gray speckled tom. “Thanks for your input, Ashblaze but I didn’t ask you.” Wolfcall retorted coldly, “I asked Lionstrike.” “No, I think Ashblaze picked some good cats, but I’ll come along too, with Rosecloud.” Lionstrike mewed. “Good plan, that’ll leave some warriors here to defend the camp.” Wolfcall meowed. “Go round them up and we’ll leave. Quickly! Or we’ll be late.” With that, Lionstrike sped off. Once all the cats had gathered Wolfcall padded off with the warriors following. Moonshine took easy stride alongside her followed by Lionstrike and Rosecloud who was flanked rather closely on her other side by Ashblaze who was followed by Smokehaze, Whitefur, and Redtail. Cadrinalpaw and Tigerpaw brought up the rear as they came to the Great Oak. The giant tree was barely recognizable now, the leaves had gone-burnt off long ago-and the tree was charred. Pieces of bark were falling off and turning to ash more and more each day. When they had got there, DuskClan was already sitting with their pelts bristling and their fangs bared. “You are late.” Hissed a black tom with white paws, sitting in the giant gray tree. “I apologize, Whitestar. I was late coming back from Moonpool.” Wolfcall retorted curtly but was quickly hit with another hiss from the she-cat sitting next to Whitestar. “You shouldn’t be late at all!” “Who am I to determine how long StarClan’s messages take, Pebblestar?” Wolfcall hissed. “Who are you to question StarClan’s decision to relay a message to me?” She didn’t wait for a response before jumping up onto her branch opposite Whitestar and Pebblestar and watched her clan take its place alongside the DuskClan cats. They shyed away from them but the StormClan cats didn’t seem to mind at all. They all settled down as Wolfcall allowed Whitestar to give his report. “The prey is running well in DuskClan. So far, not one of our warriors has gone unfed thanks to our RiverClan kin.” Cheers arose from the RiverClan cats and Whitestar waited for them to finish. “RiverClan thanks you for your praise, Whitestar.” Pebblestar mewed and Whitestar nodded. “Since my last report one of our kits has been made into an apprentice, Bluepaw.” Both Clans cheered for Bluepaw and Wolfcall silently hoped that maybe the DuskClan cats would appreciate the praise. It was hard to tell if it did. “And Marshkit and Silverkit are nearing the age of apprenticeship as well. We will soon have fine warriors and more kits. We thank StarClan for awarding our clan so much good luck.” The DuskClan cats yowled their approval and Whitestar turned to look at Pebblestar. “We have another announcement as well.” He said once the yowls died down. “Pebblestar and I are having kits.” There was silence for a little while and then the whole clearing erupted in congratulatory yowls from both clans. Pebblestar and Whitestar’s tails entwined and Wolfcall nodded to them both, for she knew nothing she could say would be heard over the many voices of the cats. Once all the noise had quieted down, Wolfcall knew it was time to make her report. She waited until there was complete silence before speaking. “Congratulations, Whitestar and Pebblestar. StormClan has been doing alright during this leaf-fall. One of our kits has been made into an apprentice, Cardinalpaw.” Both Clans congratulated Cardinalpaw and Wolfcall continued. “Our charred territory has not slowed down our health or fighting ability. StormClan is still strong as ever.” She left out the part where she went to the moonstone and saw Firestar. She reminded herself to talk to Moonshine about it later. “That is all. This Gathering is over.” And with those meows Wolfcall lept down from the Charred Oak followed by the other two leaders. A few StormClan cats went up to personally congratulate Pebblestar and Whitestar and Wolfcall could notice the skeptical look the expectant leader was giving her. Pebblestar wanted to know what Wolfcall saw last night, but Wolfcall refused to let it get under her fur. Her business was something she would discuss with her clan and her clan alone.
